Point Samson Beach Guide: Where to Swim, Snorkel and Soak up the Sunshine

Point Samson beaches are as varied as they are beautiful. From reef walks at Main Beach to snorkelling at Honeymoon Cove and fishing at Johns Creek, every Point Samson beach offers something different. Best of all, you can easily explore them all in a weekend while visiting the Pilbara’s historic highlights, or pop down for an evening swim if you’re staying at Point Samson Resort.

Main Beach

Family-Friendly and Full of Discovery

The long sandy stretch of Point Samson Beach known as “Front Beach” or “Main Beach” is the go-to spot for families with younger kids. Swimming is best at high tide, but the real fun comes at low tide. That’s when the reef reveals its treasures. Clams, oysters, crabs, octopus and schools of little fish hide in rock pools. Sand shoes are recommended for little ones exploring the reef.

There are toilets, showers, BBQs and a playground by the beach, so it’s easy to spend the whole day. Samson Beach Tavern is also nearby for a relaxed lunch.

  • Distance from Point Samson Resort: 11-minute walk.

Back Beach

Snorkelling and Secluded Coves

Back Beach, just south of Front Beach, feels a little more rugged and adventurous. It stretches out with small coves tucked between the rocks that offer amazing snorkelling at half tide. The reef is exposed at low tide, making it ideal for exploring and spotting colourful marine life.

  • Location: Access beside the history jetty viewpoint, 18 Miller Cl, Point Samson, WA 6720. Find on Google Maps.
  • Distance from Point Samson Resort: 10-minute walk.

Fun fact: The remnants of Point Samson Jetty separating Front and Back Beach hint at the town’s maritime past. The original 700-metre structure is mostly gone, but a viewing platform now lets you take in the coastal views and read about Point Samson’s history.

Honeymoon Cove

Romantic and Relaxing (Like the Name Suggests)

Honeymoon Cove brings out the softer side of Point Samson beach destinations. The waters here are calm and clear, protected by surrounding rocks. It’s an excellent spot for a lazy swim or sunbake on the sand, and you can access the beach via a footpath and stairs.

At low tide, a reef strip runs the length of the beach, revealing coral gardens and plenty of fish. Bring your snorkel and you’ll see why locals rate this one of the most beautiful spots.

Settlers Beach

A Calm Cossack Stopover

If you’re heading to the heritage town of Cossack, WA, don’t forget your bathers. Settlers Beach is a lovely place to stop for a swim when the tide is in. One of the restored heritage buildings also houses a café, but check opening times before you go as they can change.

  • Distance from Point Samson Resort: 15-minute drive.

Johns Creek Boat Harbour

For Fishing and Adventure

Although it’s not technically a beach, most locals would agree that Johns Creek Boat Harbour is a great place to drop a line. The boat ramp offers land-based fishing, or you can put a boat in to launch a day of adventures. More adventurous types might wander the mud flats at low tide to find a mud crab or two, ideal for the BBQ back at the resort.

  • Distance from Point Samson Resort: 8-minute walk.

  • Wear reef shoes: Especially at Main Beach and Back Beach when exploring the rock pools.
  • Bring snorkel gear: Or ask the Point Samson Resort team where to hire equipment locally.
  • Pack a picnic: Most beaches have BBQs and shaded spots for a relaxed meal by the water.
